Our Story.
How it started... and where it’s going.
Founded by Emily Duff, Darling Magazine began as a feminist zine spotlighting marginalised genders in the creative industries.
Our first edition was a limited-run A5 print featuring interviews with Northern talent and sold out before going to print.
Since then, we’ve grown into an international platform, with readers in cities including Newcastle, London, New York and Auckland.
What started as a DIY project is now a home for thoughtful writing, new perspectives and meaningful conversations around culture and social justice.
We’re still Emily’s passion project. We still stand for print media. And we’re still committed to keeping everything we publish free and accessible.
Why ‘Darling’?
The name Darling holds two meanings.
Most importantly, it is a tribute to Grace Darling, the daughter of a lighthouse keeper from Bamburgh, Northumberland.
In 1838, despite storm conditions, she courageously rescued survivors from a shipwreck - saving nine lives.
As a publication rooted in the North East, her story resonates deeply with us: a symbol of selflessness and bravery.
Secondly, we’ve reclaimed the word “Darling” - so often used to belittle or dismiss - and given it new meaning: one of strength, community and purpose.
